Only few are aware that Gottlieb Daimler and his brilliant engineer Wilhelm Maybach invented the motorcycle even before the automobile. On 10 November 1885, and hence a good six months before the first documented ride of Benz‘s tricycle, Wilhelm Maybach took on his first ride with a self-constructed motorcycle that he called “riding vehicle” in the outskirts of Stuttgart. In the good 130 years that have passed since the motorcycle has experienced many contrasts and changes. Up into the 1950s it was mainly used as a relatively inexpensive means of transport for those who were not in a position to afford a car. With growing prosperity and the advent of moderately priced cars the motorcycle all but vanished from the roads for a decade. And it was not until the late 1960s that it was rediscovered as a leisure time vehicle and expression of a special lifestyle. The roughly 300 motorcycles on permanent exhibit in the Technik Museum Sinsheim document the complete history of motorcycles from the beginnings to our days.
